The World Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Day’s third edition kicks- off with the theme “Access to Healthcare for all”. It reminds the public and policy makers that Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus are a reality and increases awareness to improve the lives of people living with these conditions while celebrating many achievements made by our enthusiastic worldwide community.
Persons with Spina Bifida and/or Hydrocephalus and their parents need healthcare and social services to coordinate and cooperate with each other, in order to deliver appropriate, timely, adequate and efficient treatment and support. Services provided at an affordable and accessible multidisciplinary clinic are the best way to treat, support, and follow up a person with Spina Bifida and/or Hydrocephalus.
Health is a fundamental human right indispensable for the exercise of other human rights. The highest attainable standard of health is conducive to living an active life in dignity.
There are many social determinants of health, such as general socioeconomic, cultural and environmental conditions, living and working conditions, social and community influences, individual lifestyle factors, and age, gender and hereditary factors. The realization of the right to health therefore requires a multidisciplinary approach, from childhood into adulthood, and access to affordable, adequate, and appropriate services is imperative.

Dr.Liem Lie, Dr.Herman Bakker and Dr. Jan Willem van Capelle, pediatric urologists, have seen more than 250 children during their consultation hours and have a total of 29 patients operated in the second urological project of this year.
These urological projects we started two years ago, initially with the aim of optimalizing the medical care to the children born with spina bifida. Since 2001 we organize together with IF, incontinence training for this group of children so that they can go dry and clean to school.
However, beyond this, they should be regularly checked by an pediatric urologist to keep, bladder and kidney healthy. Unfortunately in the entire southern Peru there isn’t a pediatric urologist working and that generated major problems. Now there are not only spina bifida young patients visiting the consultationhours of the urologists, other urological (birth) deviations as hypospadias, hydronephrosis kidney etc. and there appears to be a very large group of children living with the problem of bedwetting. From the local media, there was considerable interest in Dr. Jan Willem van Capelle to interview him during the breakfast shows on this subject. And then came . In short, we have a new project with “Bedwetting”
Al sinds 2001 organiseren wij i.s.m.
