Interview met Jan Pijnenburg, directeur Pijnenburg Bouw en Industrie. Zijn bedrijf heeft al het benodigde hang en sluitwerk gedoneert aan het ziekenhuis.

Vertel iets over de historie van Pijnenburg:
Pijnenburg Bouw en Industrie, als zelfstandig bedrijf opgericht in 1946, is een gespecialiseerde groothandel in ijzerwaren, gereedschappen en bouwbeslag en richt zich met name op de sectoren bouw en industrie in de meest brede zin van het woord. Een groot deel van haar assortiment is in principe uit voorraad leverbaar en wordt desgewenst binnen 24 uur bezorgd.
Als adviseur en partner in groot- en kleinschalige projecten denkt Pijnenburg mee met de klant om het project optimaal te doen slagen. Een gespecialiseerd team in binnen- en buitendienst staat 5 dagen per week klaar om elk denkbare dienst in elk denkbare situatie te kunnen leveren.
Hoewel het zwaartepunt van haar bedrijfsactiviteiten in de provincie Noord-Brabant ligt, opereert Pijnenburg Bouw en Industrie in vrijwel geheel Nederland.
Naast haar genoemde kernactiviteiten kent Pijnenburg ook nog de activiteit Klinkpoint; in een aparte en verregaand representatieve ruimte wordt een uitgebreid en exclusief programma bouwbeslag, sanitaire accessoires, garderobes en briefkasten gepresenteerd. Klinkpoint neemt de bezoeker als het ware mee in de wondere wereld van o.a. het designbouwbeslag.

Wat is de bedrijfsvisie ten aanzien van maatschappelijk verantwoord ondernemen:
Als onderneming die midden in de samenleving staat hebben wij ervoor gekozen om het budget dat normaal beschikbaar is voor relatiegeschenken op een maatschappelijk verantwoorde manier te besteden. Er zijn immers veel doelen denkbaar die maar wat blij zijn met het geld dat aan deze relatiegeschenken besteed wordt.
Zoals je weet besteden wij traditioneel veel aandacht aan verschillende maatschappelijke doelen zoals: het project Habitat for Humanity, een stichting die in ontwikkelingslanden helpt met het bouwen van huizen, Ziekenhuisproject in Ghana, woningen voor daklozen in de Filippijnen en Guatemala. Hiermee zetten we daadwerkelijk een stuk hulpverlening in gang.
Hoe zijn jullie betrokken geraakt bij het ziekenhuisproject in Peru?
Via een goede relatie van ons bedrijf EGM Architecten uit Rotterdam en Dordrecht zijn in wij in aanraking gekomen met het ziekenhuisproject in Peru. Daar wij al meer vergelijkbare projecten op het gebied van maatschappelijk verantwoord ondernemen hebben uitgevoerd en het feit dat het hier om ziekenhuis ging sprak dit project ons extra aan. Hiermee helpen we de aller zwakste, zieke mensen. Door het leveren van hang- en sluitwerk onze core business hebben wij dit project perfect kunnen invullen.
Vind je het belangrijk dat er een draagvlak bij het personeel bestaat en hoe zorg je daarvoor?
Het is erg belangrijk dat er bij onze medewerkers draagvlak is voor het maatschappelijk ondernemen. Alle medewerkers zijn op de hoogte van de verschillende projecten, regelmatig wordt er in de diverse vergaderingen aandacht besteed aan de stand van zaken van de verschillende projecten. Verder hebben we het besluit om voortaan het budget dat normaal wordt besteed aan relatiegeschenken te besteden aan goede doelen gezamenlijk genomen. Regelmatig ontvangen we foto’s van de diverse projecten, deze worden trouw in de kantine opgehangen zodat iedereen kan zien hoe het gaat met de verschillende projecten.
Is de externe communicatie naar jullie klanten belangrijk voor dit soort projecten?
Externe communicatie naar onze klanten over dit soort projecten is belangrijk. Op onze website staat een artikel over het beleid van ons bedrijf m.b.t. maatschappelijk verantwoord ondernemen en welke projecten we ondersteunen. Verder sturen er onze klanten ieder jaar een kalender met een begeleidende brief. In deze brief geven we steeds aan dat we dit soort projecten een warm hart toedragen en dat een belangrijk deel van het budget dat normaal aan relatiegeschenken besteed wordt, besteed wordt aan dit soort projecten.
Wat zou je nog graag over dit onderwerp kwijt willen?
Graag wil ik nogmaals mijn persoonlijke betrokkenheid bij deze projecten benadrukken en aangeven dat ik samen met mijn vrouw deze projecten een warm hart toedraag. Wij zijn zelf samen met Habitat for Humanity op de Filippijnen en in Guatemala geweest om daar zelf mee te bouwen met de lokale bewoners, dit heeft dan ook een enorme indruk op ons gemaakt. Je kunt dan met eigen ogen zien hoe dankbaar en blij de mensen zijn met deze hulp. Verder hebben we ook intensief contact met het Home of Hope in Filippijnen.

Please tell us something about Pijnenburg’s history
Pijnenburg Bouw en Industrie (Construction and Industry), was established as an independent company in 1946. It is a company specialized in wholesale of iron products, tools and door furniture. It is orientated mainly towards the construction and industry sectors in the widest possible sense. A large part of its assortment of wares is deliverable from stock and is delivered within 24 hours if so desired.
As advisor and partner in large and small scale projects, Pijnenburg thinks with the client to ensure an optimal result for the project. A specialized team in the office and on the road is ready 5 days a week to provide any conceivable service in any conceivable situation.
Although the focal point of the company’s activities is the province of Noord Brabant, Pijnenburg operates throughout the Netherlands.
Besides its core activities, Pijnenburg also provides an activity known as Klinkpoint. The company presents in a separate, very representative space, an extensive and exclusive range of bouwbeslag, sanitary accessories, wardrobes and filing cabinets. Klinkpoint takes the visitor through the wonderworld of design bouwbeslag as it were.

What is the company vision with respect to socially responsible entrepreneurship?
As a company amidst society, we have chosen to use the budget normally destined for relationship presents for the purpose of charity. There are many targets thinkable that are only too happy to receive the money otherwise spent on the gifts.
As you know, we have traditionally given a lot of attention to different social goals, such as the project Habitat for Humanity, a foundation that helps to build houses in developing countries, a hospital project in Ghana, houses for homeless in the Philippines and Guatemala. We really initiate development aid in this way.
How did you get involved with the hospital project in Peru?
Through a good relation of our company, EGM Architects from Rotterdam and Dordrecht, we were introduced to the project. We have undertaken more projects in that country in the field of socially responsible entrepreneurship. The fact that it concerned a hospital in this case, gave additional appeal to us. Herewith, we help the poorest, sickest people. Providing the hang en sluitwerk, our core-business, we have been able to fill the project perfectly.
Do you think it is important to have support from your staff and how do you obtain it?
We think it is highly important to have the support of the staff. They are all aware and up to date with respect to the different projects and we regularly discuss the progress of the projects at various meetings. Furthermore, together we took the decision to use the gifts budget for charity. We regularly receive pictures from the various projects, which we diligently exhibit in the canteen for all to see.
Is the external communication about these projects to clients important to you?
Yes, external communication is important. On our website, we have an article describing our policy and which projects we support. Furthermore, each year we send our clients a calendar with an accompanying letter, describing that we support these projects because we believe in them and that an important part of the budget that we normally would have used to provide gifts to the clients is used for these projects.
What else would you like to say on the subject?
I would like to emphasize my personal involvement in this projects and say that together with my wife I care about these projects. We have been to the Philippines and Guatemala with Habitat for Humanity to help build homes with the locals. This made a very strong, lasting impression on us. You can see with your own eyes how grateful and happy people are with this aid. Furthermore, we have intensive contact with Home of Hope in the Philippines.
